Rarely has any Marathi serial won worldwide attention for the quality of its production. It was Satish Rajwade’s astute direction and debutant Chinmay Mandlekar’s dialogues that has made “Asambhav” such a huge hit, even among non-Maharashtrian households. For an audience nauseating in the overdose of mindless melodrama, “Asambhav” proved a breather. The story deals with the controversial and tabooed theme of rebirth but thanks to Satish Rajwade’s treatment, the story became an entertaining mix of tradition and innovation. On one hand, it upheld traditional values seeped in religious thought. On the other, it questioned beliefs and dogmas. In exploring the abnormal, normal and the paranormal, all in the same breath, it did not make any exclusive claims to truth.
Satish Rajwade also played the role of Inspector Vikrant Bhosle in the same show. He essayed the part with such authority and finesse that he captured everyone’s heart and soul. The audience’s psyche was run and fuelled by just one character – Vikrant.
Satish Rajwade interspersed a dark sinister look of a racy whodunit plot and a sober family drama with amazing flair and authority. In no time, Asambhav’s popularity reached enormous heights. Under Satish Rajwade’s direction, Asambhav’s team won many Ma. Ta. Sanmaan awards including Best Serial and Best Director awards. In a record achievement, it bagged five awards at the 33rd Radio and Television Advertising Practitioners’ Association of India (RAPA) awards function which again included awards for best serial and best director. The serial won Satish Rajwade celebrity fans including the veteran composer Pyarelal of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame who called him to his residence to congratulate him.
For a few months in between, Satish Rajwade had quit Asambhav due to his personal commitments. But Asambhav had become so synonymous with his name that a huge uproar on the auduence's part compelled the channel to get its rightful director back on board. However, Satish Rajwade could not continue with Asambhav for a long time and quit the show yet again. Asambhav's popularity has been on a steep downhill slide ever since.
